Website marketing ideas were different in old days, than they are now. The aim however remained the same, and that was to reach maximum number of people through different channels and methods.

What were different methods of old days’ website marketing?

It would be wrong to call these methods old day website marketing, because these methods of marketing are still in use and are just as popular as modern times marketing. Old days website marketing methods are:-

Banners: Banners were especially favorite form of website marketing especially for affiliates because these banners generally added a lot of color and spunk to their websites. Banners are available in different colors, sizes and shapes. These are normal rectangular ones which span all width of website or the ones that are small enough to be included within a small space in the content of your website. These banners can be called the large banners, small banners, half page banners, buttons, etc. Banners are coded so you know when someone has clicked them and the link followed to the main website.

Pop-Ups: This was another innovative method of marketing in old days, though it does exist on some websites yet, most have chosen to remove it, to be included in top positions in google rankings. Pop-Ups, though largely useful also have a surprise factor that can irritate the visitor to the site, it was also known as not so clean practice of marketing. Pop-Ups though served the purpose of marketing, websites with pop-ups were never encouraged to get top rankings in search engines.

Pop-Unders: This was another marketing gimmick tried by webmasters, instead of messages and advertisements popping on windows, these pop-under came under the main window in the task bar space, though these were not as irritating these did have the sly value to it. However, both pop-ups and pop-under had their share in increasing customer base.

Exit traffic: This was yet another internet marketing strategy tried out by webmasters, a window would be automatically activated the moment you chose to shut down the website or decided to exit from the website through browser. The exit window generally contained questionnaire, poll or advertisement regarding website. This method too did not go down well with users because this disturbed their speed of internet browsing.

There are some more methods like text links, etc. but these are very much in use today also, so you cannot call them old time marketing.

Marketing concept in the earlier times was not what it is today, today marketers try to bring in customers by being at a more personal level with them, instead earlier point of view was not to let go of a visitor once he was there on the website. This resulted into using gimmicks that would involve the visitor further and entice him to leave his email id so that promotional offers could be send later on too.

Today, website promotion advertising spans more than 3-4 methods which are interesting, informative and indulgent rather than only sell-sell-sell. These methods are becoming famous not just with the webmaster but also with the users.
